Five Unusual Hacky Sack Patterns

A hacky sack is a small, round bag filled usually with dried beans or plastic beads. Quite often, these small balls are crocheted, with many patterns available online. They became popular during the 1970s, inspired by Asian shuttlecock sports such as Jianzi and Sepak Takraw, which both remain popular in the Far East.
Naturally, the creativity of the knitting and crochet world has inspired some eccentric patterns for hacky sacks. Whether or not you’re particularly active in sports doesn’t matter, some of these ingenious manifestations are a lot of fun.

pokeball hacky sack

by Sheila Hunt

Whether or not you caught all 150 pokémon during your child, or whether you started a new journey when the Pokémon Go craze was at its peak,  these pokéballs are perfect for recreating idyllic memories from the past.
Worsted 10 ply yarn is recommended, with your HiyaHiya Aluminium 5.0mm Crochet Hook ideal to help you catch your first pokémon. Fill it with fiberfill and plastic pellets to have a heavier hacky sack that is perfect throwing, becoming a great addition for a cosplayer or professional pokémon trainer.

nightmare before christmas hacky sack

by Comfy Cabana

It’s a relationship that seems to have blossomed unnoticed, crochet and amigurumi lovers seem to be fans of A Nightmare Before Christmas. Impeccable taste for sure, but this hacky sack of Jack Skellington’s head is the oddest inspiration from the film yet.
A 3.75 mm crochet hook is used to weave worsted 10 ply yarn into this eerily popular hacky sack pattern. Now both Halloween and Christmas are bad excuses not to pick up your hacky sack and play some Jianzi.

hamburger hacky sack

by Margaret Kosztelnik

Perhaps not the best delectable to associate with sport, however, this hamburger is definitely one of the oddest hacky sacks around. While the three-dimensional detailing might seem like it would have decreased aero-dynamism when in use, the designer assures this pattern is still usable for sport.
Plumknit 8-ply Cashmere is recommended, along with a 4.0mm crochet hook to begin your gorge into deliciousness. To keep your energy levels up, crochet this hamburger and have a game of Jianzi.

donald trump hacky sack

by Knotty Redhead

Easily the most divisive hacky sack of all time. Definitely unusual and perhaps a good excuse to play Jianzi or Sepak Takraw with, this Donald Trump hacky sack is certainly odd. The resemblance is uncanny, albeit with a better head of hair. Unfortunately, no pattern is available, but if you want to throw your money at some stress relief, you can directly on the designer’s Etsy.

hamster hacky sack

by Miss_Who

After the previous entry, it was advisory to end this list with something adorable. The designer uses spare socks to make this pattern, but you can certainly crochet or knit your own socks and transform them into these cute hamsters! However, I imagine playing Jianzi would be quite difficult with this pattern, how could you kick these critters about?
